Splash and Learn approaches Learning through Art

We focus on Constructing, Gathering, Organizing, and Applying Knowledge in approaches that encourage both learning and creative fun.

Constructing and Gathering Knowledge

  • At Splash and Learn, we believe that children actively construct knowledge through routines, play, practices, language and of course art. We allow children to use a variety of strategies to gather information based upon their own individualized approach to learning and art.

  • Stimulating children's curiosity through use of "provocation" strategies when introducing  new topics in the areas of Mathematics, Phonics, Reading, Spelling, and Number & Letter recognition through the use of art projects.

  • Providing real art objects that can allow children to manipulate and explore areas of learning so that they better understand taught lessons.

Applying Knowledge

  • Prior knowledge and experiences can be used to express and create new understandings.

  • Provide opportunities for children to engage in creative and non-traditional ways of learning in areas such as Mathematics, Phonics, Reading, Spelling, and Number & Letter recognition.

  • Provide opportunities for children to present and describe their creations and lessons learned.

Learning through Experience

  • Experiences provide the context in which learning is constructed through art.

  • Explicitly discuss and present/model a variety of strategies that can be used to solve problems (e.g., using art materials in new ways, breaking tasks into steps.

  • Encourage children to use available art materials to solve problems.

  • Displaying a variety of art materials and ask learners to complete a task, allowing them to choose the material that best suits their learning experience through the use of art.

Splash and Learn also uses art for Language And Literacy Development:

English Language Arts

Foundation Skills

  • Emerging reading involves the use of art to create pictures, symbols, and text to gain information and derive meaning.

  • We provide rich environmental print in the classroom through creation (e.g., drawing and coloring shapes, letters, and even phrases.

  • We utilize our entire space as a classroom. This allows us to add charts and word walls for the children to reflect on previous lessons on a daily basis.
